Yes.. it is considered lucky because they landed on the Hudson River instead of sea because there is no wave in the river.

Pilot experience comes into play to ensure the smoothest landing on the river. A little mistake on the angle, the plane might be gone into pieces.

All the planes are designed to be able to float on the water safely, but it all depends on the weather condition, pilot skill and landing zone that leads to either a safe or a disastrous landing.
